It’s time to get out the Bilby books and activities! I have a good collection of Bilby books. Not all of them are about Easter, but they are all stunning examples of Australian children’s literature.
Here is the list of books I recommend:
Bilby Moon by Margaret Spurling and Danny Snell
The Smallest Bilby and the Easter Games by Nette Hilton and Bruce Whatley
The Smallest Bilby and the Easter Tale by Nette Hilton and Bruce Whatley
Little Barry Bilby had a fly upon his nose by Colin Buchanan and Roland Harvey
Little Barry Bilby and the Big Bush Band by Colin Buchanan and Roland Harvey
A Home for Bilby by Joanne Crawford and Grace Fielding
Dance Bilby Dance by Tricia Oktober
Bilby Secrets by Edel Wignell and Mark Jackson
These ones are my favourites
The Smallest Bilby and the Easter Games
This book tells the story of the old Easter Bunny looking for an animal to hand the job over to. They decide to hold the Easter Games to work out the best animal for the job. There are sweet illustrations of Australian animals throughout the book. The ending of the book is lovely, talking about kindness to others. I have read this to my class every year for many years and it soon becomes a re-reading favourite.
Bilby Secrets is the only non-fiction title on the list. It gives excellent and accurate information about bilbies. The illustrations are beautiful, and give a sense of personality to the bilbies and showcase the colours of the Australian bush.
Little Barry Bilby and the Big Bush Band
This is my most recent favourite off the list! Barry Bilby needs to save his bush school, so he gathers some friends together and forms a bush band. They perform at the Tanga Langa Talent Quest to win the golden gumnut prize. The illustrations are classic Roland Harvey and there is a CD with it, so you can sing the story to the tune of Waltzing Matilda.
Enjoy this Easter season.
